![]() The IRIS is shown here serving the lighthouse at the Delaware Breakwater in1899. IRIS had many careers. First built in 1897 by Neafie & Levy of Philadelphia as a private freighter she was bought by the USLHS in 1899 and served as an engineering tender on Delaware Bay. She was sold in 1935 into private hands and used again as a freighter. At the start of WWII she served as a tug for the U.S. Army. In 1943 she served the US Navy and finally after the war was sold and served as a fishing vessel until 1973 when she was scrapped. IRIS was 153' LOA, steel hull with a single coal fired steam engine. |
