GERANIUM was originally the wooden sidewheel steam tug John Dix built in 1863. Purchased by the U.S.Navy the same year. She served as a tug in South Carolina during the Civil war. In 1865 she was purchased by the USLHS and assigned to tender service out of New Orleans.
