FENCE LIGHTSHIP (also known as Hedge Fence) # 49 was stationed at the dangerous shoal at the western edge of Massachusetts' Nantucket Sound main channel. She was built in Boston in 1891 of pine and oak with iron frames. Originally schooner rigged, she was rammed and sunk on station, but later raised and returned to service.
