![]() DIAMOND SHOAL #71 served at stations in Massachusetts, Delaware, Virginia and off North Carolina's coast at Diamond Shoal. The 122' steam powered ship was built in 1897 by the Bath Iron Works of Maine with a composite hull-steel frames and wood bottom/sides. At Diamond Shoal in 1918 #71's captain reported the presence of a German submarine in the area, but the message was intercepted by the submarine and after giving the crew an opportunity to abandon ship the submarine sunk the lightship with her surface guns. |
